The ICU patient is cared for by a multi-disciplinary team consisting of medical staff, nursing, allied health, support staff and administration services.
There are nine ICU medical consultants, one in each pod with a registrar and resident doctor.
An Associate Nurse Unit Manager (ANUM) or a senior nurse in charge oversees the running of the unit.
Each patient has a bedside clinical nurse, while an allied health team of physiotherapists, speech therapists, social workers and dieticians works in collaboration with the medical team.
Medical
The senior medical staff are all Fellows of the College of Intensive Care Medicine, with special interests in a wide variety of clinical and non-clinical portfolios. We also have ICU registrars and residents rotating through the unit. They come from a variety of specialities, including emergency medicine, general medicine and anaesthesia.

Nursing
The nursing staff consist of 80 per cent clinical nurse specialists and are supported by clinical support nurses and a nurse educator. The nursing staff also have the opportunity to become ECMO and paediatric ICU accredited, and we currently have 30 ECMO accredited nurses and 70 per cent of our nurses are Paediatric ICU accredited. We also offer post-graduate positions in critical care nursing.
Our research nurses coordinate and lead studies that are undertaken in the ICU, but also with affiliations with other specialities.
Our safety and quality nurses provide key roles in ensuring adequate data for the ANZICs COMET website, as well as other programs to highlight key performance indicators as well as our patients’ outcomes.
