Cardiothoracics

The University Hospital Geelong ICU provides post-operative care for cardiac surgery within the Geelong and south-west region.

The Barwon Health Cardiothoracic Department performs over 400 cardiac cases a year and has a close and collaborative relationship with the ICU for post-operative management and perfusionists (healthcare professionals specially trained in operating the heart-lung bypass machine for cardiac surgery).

Cases range from coronary bypass grafting, to complex thoracic aortic surgery, with post-operative care tailored to each patient’s needs.

The ECMO service provides ongoing cardiac support as required for the complex cardiac surgical patient.
